what an awesome time this must have been. two of my favorite comic writery people in the world. Lynda is one of my all time heroes.
Last Thursday, Matt Groening visited Lynda Barry’s “What It Is” class at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Later he joined her on stage at Madison’s Museum of Contemporary art to talk about his Life in Hell comic strip and the the friendship they’ve shared for over 30 years.

Part One of: AWESOME MUSIC I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT, by Jenne.
Curiosity Killed The Cat, “Down To Earth”
Back on the 80’s, I found myself falling in love with all things British. The style, the accent but most of all, the MUSIC. I found this late night radio show on 99 Rock WPLR called “Rock Over London”, and it was on right before Dr. Demento. Oh how i lived for those two hours! The rain fell hard in my humdrum town, and I felt like an outcast most of the time, but listening to this awesome music made me feel like someone got me, someone understood.
(I am beginning to think a lot of these entries will feature artists I found on this show)
One night, there was a song by Curiosity Killed The Cat called “Misfit” played and the words really grabbed me. i sang that song in my head for three days, played it on the crappy little boombox on one of those old cassettes i’ poke the little plastic parts out of so i could record over something i’d bought but ended up not really liking. In our little Eastern Long Island town, they didn’t have Tower Records or any cool NYC record stores to hit. They had one little place about 30 minutes from my house and they didn’t carry much of anything I would normally have wanted. (a year after this my patience was rewarded with a really awesome record store!) I ordered CKTC and when it arrived, it was so worth the wait. the voicestreaming out of the radio was beautiful. the music made me want to dance and dance I did.
all these years later, the song “Down to Earth” popped into my head and suddenly i was back in 1986 again, and it gave me an awesome feeling.
Hope you enjoy! thanks for reading!
“Kurt was very cool. He had a wonderful balance of raw, dangerous anger, but also he was this delicate, fun person, y’know? He could be kind of scary and out of control on stage, but then after the show he’d be the most shy, introverted person you’ve ever met. He was brilliant, but he played dumb. And you know, Kurt was funny as shit. A lot of people don’t realize that he was so hilarious. That guy’s sense of humor wasn’t from here. He was just very, very funny.”

For my fellow Target Robins. We’ve all heard at least once “I only came in here for one thing!” when a guest comes through our line.
this reminds me of one of my coworkers. i love her because she says “fuck” a lot. it makes this place better.
*when my boss is yelling at someone in Italian in her office. it’s loud but oddly comforting.
*when everyone else leaves around 4 pm. i have an hour of playing my music loud and working without any interruption and sing along to Barenaked Ladies or Green Day or whatever I looked up on Spotify.
*when my friends Sarah and Mike have delicious tea to share and it helps soothe my throat which is wickedly sore from singing
*the drumstick pencils on my desk i sue to practice for Rock Camp.
*my red Swingline stapler. Yes, like Milton from Office Space.
and now, off to finish up!
